UK govt fears data loss through social networks

Fears about information security and data protection have slowed the rate what which government departments are taking up Web 2.0 technologies, it has been reported.
According to a report by Ovum, which is entitled Business Trends: Understanding Your Government Customer 2010, 50 per cent of European respondents cited concerns surrounding IT and network security as being the greatest barriers to implementing social media technologies, reports V3.
"A lot of governments are more concerned with creating tools that empower citizens to access resources than use tools like Twitter to talk to the public," the news provider reported Jessica Hawkins, an associate analyst at Ovum, as saying.
Some 16 per cent of government agencies around the world have already taken advantage of Web 2.0 technologies. However, in the foreseeable future, only 41 per cent plan to adopt them.
At the moment in the UK, one of the key issues businesses have to address is data protection as new measures were implemented in April aimed at penalising organisations and government departments with fines of up to £500,000 for data loss and breaches.
