Web users still 'tempted' to open scam emails

Many people put themselves at risk of information security breaches by falling victim to opening scam emails, just out of curiosity, it has been suggested.
More than 420,000 scam emails are sent in the UK every single hour, according to a recent report by CPP, a life assistance company.
Despite being able to identify suspicious emails, the intrigue of what they might contain overcomes people, said Rik Ferguson, senior security advisor at Trend Micro. This could affect firms' network security.
He said:"What a lot of people will do when they get an email is recognise it as not being legitimate in any sense...but are still very tempted to click on the URL [Uniform Resource Locator] that's in the email.
"Most of these emails that we see now don't contain any kind of malicious attachment; they just contain a link to a website to allow criminals to attack."
Mr Ferguson warned that even if people do not give away their personal information on the site, they can still be affected by malware.
