Companies 'must use' digital IT marketing

Regardless of whether they want to or not, businesses should be using digital IT marketing, it has been suggested.

By 2014, the internet's share of total media ad spending will rise to more than 20 per cent from just over 15 per cent in 2010, recent figures from eMarketer show.

"The more well-established companies are realising that they need to do something online now whether they like it or not," said Di Forster, director at search engine optimisation (SEO) company SEO Junkies.

In order to attract a wider range of customers, people should be looking to use online IT marketing techniques, she advised.

And, as more businesses now have younger employees working for them, such as in IT sales and marketing roles, they are more likely to adopt digital IT marketing methods as this generation of workers will probably be "pushing SEO and online marketing", according to Ms Forster.

"What they've got to do is convince people at director-level or people who sign off budgets to actually spend online rather than print, which is potentially a bit of a culture shock."
