IT security is reliant on encrypted data

The proliferation of flexible working means that non-encrypted data is at an increased risk of falling into the wrong hands.
According to new research sponsored by Credant Technologies, by failing to adopt standard IT security procedures - such as encryption - IT professionals could be putting the security of their company's and clients' data at risk.
The research showed that more than half of the 277 IT security workers polled fail to encrypt company data when carrying it around on a USB stick.
Sean Glynn, vice-president and chief marketing officer at the firm, said: "If over half of this IT-savvy audience are carrying unprotected sensitive information on USB sticks... it makes me question just how big this problem is and, more importantly, what needs to happen to make organisations wake up to the risk."
The research also highlighted the types of data that were at risk from non-encryption, including intellectual property, customer details and employee information.
The NHS Stoke-on-Trent and Basingstoke and North Hampshire NHS Trust recently became the latest high-profile public organisations to fall victim to security breaches.
