IT security professionals cannot keep blocking social media

IT security professionals cannot continue barring employees from using web 2.0 technologies such as blogs and social networking websites, it has been claimed.
According to industry expert Tom Gillis, blanket restrictions on such technology is tantamount to avoiding the issue as the technology is unlikely to go away any time soon.
Speaking to CSO Online, Gillis claimed that ignoring social media is like burying your head in the sand as flexible working and web 2.0 technologies are set to become more prolific in the coming years.
He told the news provider: "We want to see our customers shift away from a security posture of no. Away from saying things like 'Google Android? No, we can't support that. Web-based applications like Google docs? Not secure, don't use that'.
"We want to get away from that to a posture that says 'Absolutely. Use the tools that help you get your job done efficiently'."
According to reformed hacker Robert Schifreen, social networking can pose security risks to both businesses and individuals.
