Data protection is 'key issue' with the cloud

When using cloud computing, data protection is of utmost importance as "no matter what you do, a third part will always have access [to it]", according to Andy Cordial, the managing director at Origin Storage.

His comments came after a Business Week investigation found that, while cloud computing data storage and availability can cut some companies' costs by as much as 20 to 25 per cent, the safety of
the data is still a major information security issue.

When it comes to physical data storage, the main advantage "is control", said Mr Cordial.

"Physical storage puts you in control and not a third party.

"I would always recommend physical over cloud if the data you are storing is highly sensitive."

In cloud computing, all the data storage and availability will be "centrally administered by a third-party and therefore out of your control", he added.

Despite this, Google has recently been involved in a major push to get its customers to switch their storage solutions to the cloud.
