Further NHS data protection breaches

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has criticised the NHS for further data protection breaches in the organisation, which put patients' information at risk.

NHS Stoke-on-Trent and Basingstoke and North Hampshire NHS Trust have become the latest bodies within the health service to have breached the Data Protection Act.

At the beginning of the month, the ICO released data which showed that the NHS was the worst offender when it came to data protection issues reported to the office.

Some 1,007 breaches have been reported to the ICO since the beginning of the year and 305 of those have come from the NHS, showing that the organisation is not adequately addressing its information security.

Mick Gormill, head of enforcement at the ICO, said: "Everyone makes mistakes, but regrettably there are far too many within the NHS.

"Health bodies must implement the appropriate procedures when storing and transferring patients' sensitive personal information."
