Social media websites are becoming an increasing threat to IT security, it has been suggested.

Robert Stroud, the international vice president of Isaca, formerly known as the Information Systems Audit and Control Association, said "organisations should implement an effective awareness and education campaign" in order to increase their IT security and control their social media strategy.

His comments came as the a new report published by ISACA revealed that social media poses a number of major threats to organisations.

These range from viruses and malware to brand hijacking and a lack of concern over content.

A recent survey by ISACA found that 62 per cent of firms questioned put the risk of employees visiting social networking sites or checking personal emails at medium or high.

Mr Stroud said IT security related to social media sites use could be improved if firms make staff aware of the correct guidelines and etiquette in order to improve data protection.
