Google's security concerns about Windows 'don't add up'

Google's alleged decision to drop Microsoft's Windows operating system is more to do with competition than information security issues, it has been claimed.

At the end of last month, the Financial Times reported that several Google employees had said the internal use of Windows was being phased out due to concerns surrounding information security.

However, Mike Simons, editor of the IT management website ComputerWorld.co.uk, said: " The reasons Google employees gave to the Financial Times for the decision to drop Windows don't add up.

"Google is a target for cybercriminals for what it is, not what operating system [OS] its staff use."

In a blog post published just after the article for the FT, Brandon LeBlanc, Windows communications manager at Microsoft, was looking to "set the record straight" about the information security of the system.

He said that with regards to security, even hackers concede that Microsoft is doing a better job of securing its products, resulting in better network security, than its rivals.
