Data protection of emails 'is a concern'

A number of security firms are concerned about the safety of the data in their emails, a survey has revealed.

Some 93 per cent of IT security firms polled were either very or somewhat concerned by data protection when it comes to emails, IT Pro reports.

Even though it was only a small number of companies, Paul Hennin, director of marketing in Europe, the Middle East and Africa for Proofpoint, told the news provider that it was representative of the whole market.

Around 64 per cent of companies had some business continuity strategies in place to deal with data protection.

However, this means one-third do not have these regulations.
"That response showed there was a lack of clarity in [business]," Mr Hennin told the website.

This week, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) reported that more than 1,000 breaches of data have been brought to its attention in the UK.

The NHS is the worst offender when it comes to data protection, accounting for 305 of the 1,007 breaches.

Any organisations that deliberately or accidentally breach data protection could now be subject to fines of up to £500,000 from the ICO.
