Businesses should 'review data protection'

In the wake of the government introducing new powers to fine the public sector for data breaches, all firms should look at their data protection, it has been suggested.

Writing for V3, financial director Robert Jacques said that a recent wave of hacking attacks have "punched holes in corporate and outsourced information systems", which has emphasised the importance of having adequate data
protection in place.

Any attacks on firms could not only result in loss of data, but could also impact upon the reputation of a company, he said, especially in terms of its information security.

He added that companies should not look to technology alone to protect data. "Indeed, to lock up IT security in the corporate IT department silo could be a catastrophic error."

In order to improve information security and establish effective controls, firms should look at people and processes, Mr Jacques wrote.

Last month, the government brought in new fines related to the Data Protection Act.

The Information Commissioner's Office now has the power to fine organisations breaching data protection either inadvertently or deliberately, up to £500,000 under the new rules.
