Search engine marketing (SEM) is expected to take off globally as more emerging markets enter the international arena, it has been suggested.

Search advertising will see the biggest revenue gains in US IT marketing, compared with other internet advertising sectors, between 2009 and 2014, according to recent figures from market intelligence firm International Data Corporation (IDC).

Sam Tilston, director of search engine optimisation at Idea Taxi, a website optimisation consultancy firm, said: "You will see a boom in the SEM industry in other markets as companies start to enter international markets."

Other digital IT marketing industries are falling behind the SEM industry which "is consistently experiencing double-digit growth annually", he said.

Those in IT sales and marketing may be interested to know that Mr Tilston expects the IT marketing industry to grow as models such as pay-per-click mean "a company can know the exact
return from each pound or dollar spent".

A report published earlier this year by the Search Engine Marketing Professional Organisation foujd that the North American SEM industry will grow by 14 per cent in 2010.
